Alternative Press is giving us the first taste of Burning Love’s new album Rotten Thing To Say. The record, due out on June 19th, will be their Southern Lord debut and follow up to their prior LP Songs For Burning Lovers. Listen to the track “Hateful Comforts,” learn the words and be ready to shout your guts out if you are one of the lucky ones who get to catch them on their upcoming US tour.

Anyone still bent about Cursed’s breakup may not be sold but with enough copy cats following the wake of that bands demise it is nice to see the new Colohan fronted project taking a new direction. Granted, it is not THAT far off from a majority of his oeuvre but blend in some raucous Hot Snakes inspired riffs with a good bit of Motorhead thunder.Along with bands like Coliseum and Black God we are seeing an exciting return of true rock’n’roll. Sometimes we just need good riffs and righteous solos without all the cheese associated with Metal.

Fully expect this band to dominate the internet. I can’t make any predictions based on their success in terms of touring or label signage but this will definitely be one of the biggest buzz bands this year. Mark my words.

Snakes is a four piece grind/hardcore band out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was a little apprehensive at first to give this a listen. I tend to pass over this style, I do really dig some nasty grind-ish bands but overall I feel like the genre gets a lot of auto-cred just for having a black and white album cover and claiming Trap Them as an influence but I am pleasantly surprised.

Like I said, Snakes definitely falls into a very particular style of hardcore. This style dictates their aesthetics and if I had to chance a guess, I would suspect that their backline has at least one Sunn or Sovtek amp in it. Visually and aurally the band is kind of pigeonholed but the execution is where the band shines. All in all everything works just right. Definitely a band for fans of Magrudergrind’s later work or the less touted but powerfully heavy Torch Runner. The title track “Please Just Kill Me Know” hooked me immediately with its all out energy, fuzz, and flange-y background effects. D-beat, crust, and thrash moments inflect the entire recording and everything drives to the half-paced album closer. The relatively short record kind of flies by and though I can’t say it is the most original collection of songs I have ever heard but Snakes have hit every cylinder that so many bands have been skipping over. It never bogs down, it never gets boring, every song just makes a clean cut. You have to give a band like this at least a couple spins if you consider yourself at all interested in the darkened/sludge/crust wave that skyrocketed after Cursed’s demise.
